For those that prefer to use wood for their nesting materials, our wood trays are ideal. They are available in either 8mm or 6mm hole sizes, for spring and summer bees, respectively. The trays separate into layers, making it easy to remove your cocoons. Then simply scrape them clean, restack them, and they are ready to use again. Bees prefer to use holes that have the scent of bees on them already, making reusable wood trays an ideal solution. Leafcutter bee trays come "seasoned", making them more attractive to your bees. Mason bees are less picky, simply placing your hatching cocoons on top of the tray is usually enough of an incentive for them to set up house there.
I do not recommend using a solid block of wood drilled with holes. Because it cannot be opened, and cocoons cannot be removed, they allow pests to build up. This creates an unsafe environment for your bees, and infected bees can then spread their pests to other bees in the area. (If you absolutely must use a drilled block, then at a minimum please use our insert tubes to remove your cocoons in the fall.) Our wood trays are a healthier choice for the bees, and they will thank you for it by increasing in numbers every year!
Spring mason bees use the 8mm hole size. The block contains 48 nesting holes.
Summer leafcutter bees use the smaller 6mm hole size. The block contains 104 nesting holes.
